History of Met Gala

The first Met Gala was held in 1948, and it was conceived by Eleanor Lambert, a publicist who wanted to raise money for the Costume Institute and put it on the map. The dress code was “white tie and decorations,” which meant that men were expected to wear full formal dress, and women were expected to wear long dresses and gloves.
